Oltenia

The Oltenia region plays an important role in the Romanian history. The name of the region originated from the river “Olt”, also known as Alutus or Aluta. The most famous city of the region is Craiova. It is located in the county Dolj and is the capital of Oltenia. Its history dates back two thousand years and, like the history of the region, it is a jewel for Dacian and Roman history.

One of the most important persons was probably Mihai (Viteazul) the Brave. He was the most important prince of Romania and united the three Romanian lands in 1600. The leader of Craiova was also the ruler of the Olten army, with which he conquered Transylvania, among others. However, in August 1601 Michai was assassinated on the orders of the Habsburg army commander George Basta.

In addition, Roman fortifications and Geto-Dacian buildings such as monasteries and hermitages can be found throughout the region of Oltenia. Sacred places like Cozia or Tismana were not only holy places at that time, but also schools and cultural centers.
